Surfing North Coast of Morocco part 1: Tanger to Kenitra
Even that Morocco is an all year round destination for surfing, the best time of the year goes from the late autumn to the winter months.
If you are in Europe and you wish to discover uncrowded spots with perfect conditions a great option is to cross to Morocco from Spain, you can book ferries in Algeciras or Tarifa, prices more or less 35 eur (one person) and 110 (one person plus one car), ferries will take you to Tanger city, Tanger Med or Ceuta; for me the best option is Algeciras – Ceuta if you take your car and Tarifa – Tanger city if you don’t. It takes 1 hour or 2 hours to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, note that sometimes wind can be very strong in the Strait up to 55 knots, ferries will normally stay safe in the harbour. Another option is to contact us and we will take you there with our 4×4 cars.
Tanger is an huge city with a nice medina and a lot of night life, honestly I always skip Tanger but it has some nice spots for all kind of surfers specially around Cape Espartel.
Just 30 minutes south of Tanger there is a beautiful city called Asilah and it also has long beaches all good for surfing and lot of good acommodation, this is a nice place to stop at least one night. There are some good beaches for surfing, Kitesurfing and windsurfing (Briech, Sidi Bouksibat and Reda). Don’t miss a walk inside the old town of Asilah.
Larache, 25 minutes south of Asilah, the main beaches suitables for surfing are Loukos, Las Palomas, La Cueva. Loukos (LEFT) is a very consistent beach and works best with offshore winds from the east and nortwest shore angle.
Moulay – Bousselham, (80 km of from Larache) which it is a great spot for surf, windsurf, and kite, Moulay Bousselham has a river mouth with a Lagoon that formes the Merja Zerga Natural reserve which it is also a great place for birwatching. The main surfing spots are Hawai (in front of the town opposite side of the Lagoon), Foum Al Marja which offers lefts and rights with big currents and the Qued or the river mouth and the Secret Point. The best wind direction is from the east with swell from the northwest.
Finally around 120 km south of Moulay Bousselham we can stay at Medihya Plage, Kenitra which is quite consitent specially during winter season and works quite well with southeast wind and swell from the northwest.
